A debit card is a plastic card that allows you to make a purchase without using cash. It functions like an electronic cheque in which the funds are automatically deducted from the remaining balance on the account. Debit card is usually linked to the customer’s bank account. Debit card allows you to obtain cash back from shops or ask for refund from the cashier. Debit cards also functions like an ATM card and allows you to withdraw the money from an ATM machine.

When paying for an item in a department store, the cashier will require you to enter the PIN number at the Point of Sale into an electronic handheld device. Occasionally, a signature is also required to authorize the transaction.

The use of debit cards in daily transactions has become more and more popular in countries around the globe. Debit card replaces cheque and allows you to pay for an expensive item without having to hold cash in your hand. Debit cards are used widely on the internet to purchase goods from online stores. Unlike credit card, the funds are transferred from your debit card account to the merchant account instantly so that you are not obligated to pay back at a future date. Debit card do not incur interest fee, late fee or other credit card related fees. However, the bank do charge a small fee if you use the debit card to withdraw cash from the ATM.

If there are not enough funds in your account, the payment will not be approved when you attempt to make a purchase. However, if it is a Switch, Visa, or Delta debit card, your account balance won’t be checked and the payment is likely to be approved. If you have an authorized overdraft agreement with the bank, you are required to settle the amount plus the agreed interest at the end of each month. If you did not arranged for an authorized overdraft agreement, you are required to pay a higher interest.

Debit card help you to become more financially discipline. It prevents you from racking up significant amount on your credit card debt. Before making a purchase, you will have to think twice whether you have enough funds in the account to pay for the item so that the transaction will not be declined. If you have a bad credit history, you should consider using debit card for a certain period of time to prove that you can maintain an account balance. By proving that you can maintain a debit card, you will be able to re establish your credit rating. When you want to take up a mortgage, you can show the lenders or creditors that you have improved your spending and payment habits so they will be more willing lend you the money.

Debit cards can be a useful tool to help college students to learn how to pace with their spending and keep within the limit. Debit card allows them to control the balance without increasing the credit card debt. Before applying for a debit card, you should ask the bank a few questions to understand how the whole process works.
