7 Interesting Facts That You Should Know about Tyres

Even if you are an automobile enthusiast, there will always be certain parts of the car that seem less interesting than the others. The four black spherical objects fitted on the wheels fall under that category for many. But viewing them from a different perspective may change your mind.

Consider how tyres are the only components touching the road, but they carry the entire vehicle forward. That shows how much a set of four spheres are capable of. But this is, of course, a well-known fact among everyone.

1. Original tyres were white, not black:

The primary constituent of tyres is rubber, which is naturally a shade of white. At the time of the invention of tyres in 1895, they were coloured the same. It seems like a strange concept, considering how the defining characteristic of present-day tyres is their black hue. At the beginning of the twentieth century, this colour change took place due to the addition of a compound called carbon black. It increased the tensile strength of the rubber while maintaining its temperature at a reasonable range. Nowadays, however, silica that can be obtained from sand is used in tyres.

2. Recycled tyres are used to make roads:

Piling up landfills with large quantities of waste has become a severe problem. That is why it is vital to look into recycling options. As for tyres, no European country allows them to be thrown into a dumpsite since 2006. Instead, they are used to construct road surfaces that are significantly quieter than regular concrete ones.

3. Unexpected brand as the largest tyre manufacturer:

Given the demand for tyres, it is natural to expect multinational companies such as Continental, Michelin, Pirelli, Bridgestone, etc., to be their lead producers. But surprisingly, LEGO, the kids’ toy brand, manufactures the most, around 300 million, annually.

4. Rare spares:

If you drive an older car, you might not realise that the spare wheel you take for granted is no longer a part of many automobiles. As it adds to the vehicle load, various manufactures have stopped including them as part of the original equipment. Instead, they put in a small repair kit that drivers can use as a temporary fix until they find a garage.

5.  Too high or low pressure is bad for tyre health:

Every tyre has a fixed optimum pressure range. Keeping your tyre pressure within it consistently helps your car perform safer and better. The tyres wear out less, the fuel economy remaining high.

6. Convenience of mobile tyre-fitting services

Punctures occur at the most inopportune of times. If you were travelling through an unknown road and mounting a spare wheel seems unsafe, do not worry. Even if there are no garages in view, you can bring one to you. If you call up a mobile tyre fitter, a mechanic will arrive to get the job done for you. That is not just during emergencies.

7. Proper maintenance increases the lifespan of your tyres:

How long your Continental Tyres Wolverhampton last depends less on their age and more on how you treat them. If the tread depth remains over the legal limit of 1.6 mm, you are in the clear. Regular servicing can check for any other defect in the radials. Maintaining the pneumatic pressure correctly will prevent uneven wearing of the tread. Thus, the tyres will last for a long time. But once the ten-year mark is reached, even if it shows no apparent signs of damage, it is best to swap them out. In case one or two tyres wear out, it is recommended to change the whole set. If that is not a feasible option for you, at minimum, make sure both tyres on each axle are similar.

If you own a vehicle, it is good to know some general information about its parts. The facts we mentioned about Tyres Wolverhampton are likely not small talk material. But they will help you stay protected on the road, making your rides comfortable.
