Main Applications of Transistors in Embedded Systems

In today’s world transistors is present in almost every device. As we know that transistor is a semiconductor device that helps in the regulation of current and voltage. In this article, I will tell you about the importance of transistors in practical life and embedded system. So without wasting any time let’s start.

Why transistors are used in our daily life?

The question might strike your mind when you read the article that why there is a need of using transistors in our daily life applications. So friends before transistor vacuum tubes were used. But after the invention of the transistor, from a small device to an embedded system everything has a transistor. There are multiple advantages of transistors in our daily some of which are mentioned below:

  • Small and compact space requirement

As transistors do not need any large space. They can be managed easily in small or less space in the device.

  • Solid State

They are present in a solid state and that is the reason why they are mechanically strong.

  • High Voltage

They require low voltage for working and gaining high voltage.

  • Heating

There are no overheating-related problems with transistors during operation.

  • Size

The transistors that are used in IC are small so they are easily portable.

Use of Transistor as Switch

One of the most common applications of transistors is using them as switches. We might observe that in our switches if the transistor is used then the PNP or an NPN transistor is used for biasing the transistor. There are three important modes of the transistor in which they are operated. And they are named;

  • An active region
  • Saturation region
  • Cut-off region

Working Principle of Transistor as Switch

There are two main regions in which the transistor works as a switch and they are the saturation region and the cut-off region. Transistor works as an amplifier inactive region.

The following points briefly elaborate on how a transistor works:

  • The voltage is applied at the base terminal of a transistor. After the application switching the operation is being performed.
  • The voltage ( in between 0.7V) is applied amount the base and the emitter the voltage across the collector towards the emitter is said to be equal to zero.
  • Here transistor acts as a short circuit and shows the transistor in off condition.
  • In no voltage case, when there is no voltage applied then the base and the emitter terminal operate in the cut-off region and now act as an open circuit.
  • Now for the reference, any bulb is connected ( switching connection load) as a reference. When it will be switched on then the current will flows from the bulb to the ground.

Applications of Transistors in Practical Life

Transistors have made our life easier. The following applications show the use of transistors in our daily life:

  • Transistors are widely utilizedin mobile phones. Every mobile phone uses a transistor amplifier
  • Integrated circuits are used in almost every device. Again transistors are used in building them.
  • Transistors are used in controllers and power regulators
  • Transistors are used in signal amplifier devices
  • The microprocessor has many transistors in them
  • From computers to whole embedded systems transistors are used in almost every device
  • In digital and analog switches, transistors are used
  • In calculators and radios, transistors are used in amplifying circuits also

Application of Types Transistors

Types of transistors have numerous applications in the embedded systems also.

  1. Bipolar Junction Transistors

The transistor causes the great flow of current from the emitter towards the collector in case of current in a small amount is passing from the base.

2. Field Effect Transistor

Such types of transistors are known as voltage-controlled devices. As they have a higher value of impedance when low current is flowing from them.

3. Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor

The transistor is used in the digital and analog microwave. They provide a fast switching speed. They act as a power amplifiers in lasers and mobile phones.

4. Darlington Transistor

Such kinds of transistors gain current as it is their build-in capability. They are also used as touch-sensitive buttons because of their ability to pick current from human skin.

5. Schottky Transistor

The transistors prevent saturations and help in diverting high current inputs.

6. Avalanche Transistor

They can switch high currents in less than nanoseconds transitions.
