To decide which players are the best, I conducted a readers’ poll. I asked readers to rank the top ten players in order of preference, assigning a point value for each vote. A player received 10 points for a first place vote, and a player with nine points was considered a second place vote.
Barry Sanders
Despite being a one-time great, Sanders ranks among the top 10 greatest football players of all time. This ranking was made by a panel of 150 former coaches, sports media, and college administrators. The top spot went to Jim Brown, while 19 other running backs landed in the top 10. Herschel Walker of Georgia and Bo Jackson of Auburn rounded out the top three. Of the current century’s players, Adrian Peterson ranked 45th.
Reggie White
While he did not play for the NFL, White signed with the Tennessee Volunteers after graduating from high school. He was recruited by former Tennessee star Ray Rhodes, and the two quickly became friends. White was a raw pass rusher who had an exceptional ability to sack a quarterback. His performance as a rookie earned him an Andy Spiva Award.
Mane Garrincha
Mane Garrincha ranks among the top 10 football players of all time thanks to his incredible dribbling skills and ability to beat defenders. He is regarded by some as the best dribbler of all time and led Brazil to two consecutive World Cup victories in 1958 and 1962. He was also the first player to win the Golden Ball and was enlisted in the Hall of Fame of Brazil.
Lionel Messi
There’s no denying that Messi is one of the best players in the world today. His performances in international competitions are unbeatable and are complemented by the greatest midfield ever assembled. Moreover, he is Argentina’s all-time leading goalscorer, surpassing the great Gabriel Batistuta some years ago. In fact, he has reached 600 goals in his career already and could easily pass the 700 mark.
Diego Maradona
Diego Maradona is a football legend who played in Argentina and played for the national team. He made his debut when he was just eight years old. He was poached from his native Los Cebollitas and moved to Argentinos Juniors. His top flight debut came on October 20, 1976. During the game, he slipped through the legs of Juan Domingo Cabrera, a defender. He was then given an elbow to the chin from a Barcelona teammate and went on to score a goal.
Aaron Donald
Although Donald has only played eight seasons, he has already built a reputation as one of the best defensive players in the history of the game. Last season, Donald finished with 12.5 sacks and 84 tackles, 15 more than he had in any season prior. In addition, Donald finished second in the voting for Defensive Player of the Year. He previously won the award three times. In addition, Donald has made the Pro Bowl in all eight seasons. He is only behind Derrick Thomas in the number of consecutive appearances.
Tom Brady
There’s no denying that Tom Brady is one of the best players in the history of the NFL. He is a seven-time Super Bowl Champion, three-time MVP, and the most productive quarterback of all time. The New England Patriots quarterback finished the 2021 season with 5,316 yards, 43 touchdowns, and a QBR of 68.1. He ranks right up there with the titans of North American sports like Joe Montana and Jim Brown koora live.
