Breaking Generational Patterns: Developing Healthy Relationships

Breaking Generational Patterns: Developing Healthy Relationships

As you get older, you’ll start to notice some traits of your parents thrive in you. Some of them may be useful. However, some can be negative, such as the repetition of your parents’ unhealthy habits of relationship (consider blaming each other, persistent argument, negative aggressiveness, etc.).

These generational patterns should not determine your identity. If you want to develop healthy and productive relationships, you can break the cycle by self-awareness while working in a therapeutic environment with your psychotherapist.

What are the patterns of generations

Generational patterns are personality traits or patterns that are passed from parent to child. Sometimes they are positive, but negative patterns often attract more attention.

Some patterns of negative generations include:

  • Hostility toward partners
  • Short temperature
  • Domestic violence/violence towards partners
  • Lack of loyalty/fraud

How to break the cycle

Breaking the cycle is not easy, but it is possible! Begin by reflecting on yourself and your family history.

Think about family history

To find the root of the problem, you should think about the history of your childhood and family. Was there an event in your life that led you to where you are today?

For example, if your parents often argue and are verbally abusive of each other, you are more likely to be verbally abusive of your husband.

By specifying the pattern root, you can start tackling the problem face to face.

Examine yourself

Once you find the root of the problem, you can start looking inside. When you shout at your husband, what is the driving force? Is it a short mood? Or is the screaming feel the second nature now?

When you can experience feelings inside, you can start making progress towards breaking the pattern.

Asking for help

It’s not always easy to research deep down to find the root of the problem. Sometimes you need an external perspective to get you to the place you want. Here the wizard can help.

An individual counselor or couples can help you understand the trauma you experienced while growing up with your family. They will understand your experiences so that you can overcome these negative feelings. They will also work to address the drivers behind the repetition of patterns.

Even if you can define the problem on your own, it is sometimes difficult to know what to do next? Change yourself for the best difficult trip to travel alone. An individual or marriage counselor will help you through every step of the process, so you will feel supported.
