CHANUKAH IN THE CITY is presented by the JEWISH COMMUNITY COUNCIL OF VICTORIA and supported by THE CITY OF MELBOURNE. It has been an annual event in the City of Melbourne for the last eight years.
A free family event featuring a variety of family entertainment, carnival rides and attractions, CHANUKAH IN THE CITY 2010 will appeal to all ages and backgrounds.
The event starts at 5:00pm on WEDNESDAY 8 DECEMBER and entertainment runs through until 10:30pm at Federation Square (on the Main Stage and in the surrounding areas in front of the Main Screen).
Australian music icon RENEE GEYER will headline this year’s CHANUKAH IN THE CITY. Former Australian Queen of Pop and best-known today for her work in the jazz and blues world, Renee Geyer has headlined festivals around the country and has a catalogue of hits and favourites that continue to delight audiences the world over.
Also appearing at this year’s event is passionate singer/songwriter RONIT who has built a devoted following around the country. Featuring strong vocals, emotive lyrics and fiery guitar playing RONIT brings to the event her unique melting pot of soul, roots and rock with hints of Middle Eastern-inspired melody, due in part to her Israeli heritage.
Younger children will love seeing the live show ROCK WITH THE TOTS featuring characters from the popular children’s TV series FIFI AND THE FLOWERTOTS.
Musical entertainment begins with Melbourne’s acclaimed KLEZMER TRIO featuring Ernie Gruner and friends. Also appearing during the evening will be THE FEM BELLING TRIO featuring South African born jazz singer and musician Fem Belling who has made a name for herself on jazz and musical theatre stages on the West End (London) and around the world. THE CHANUKAH ALL-STARR BAND will also appear at this year’s event and features an 8 piece band playing a mix of traditional Hora music and contemporary numbers.
Other entertainment includes drumming and dancing from local Jewish community groups including ACCESS INC, which provides advocacy, support and networking for people with disabilities, their families and their carers; also children from BIALIK COLLEGE (Junior School) and the popular CENTRAL SHUL CHOIR.
Many of Melbourne’s Jewish Community dignitaries will be present to assist in lighting the largest gas-burning CHANUKIAH in the Southern Hemisphere.
Families can enjoy this afternoon and evening of fun in Fed Square which also features a super-sized inflatable ride, amusements and Kosher food and drink galore!
