Axial Wear

A tyre shows axial wear when it is over-inflated for a very long time. This kind of wear primarily targets the central axis of the tyre. If you maintain steady pressure on the tyres, this wear can be avoided

Every car tyre has a recommended pressure level mentioned in the owner’s manual, follow that recommended level for better results.

Side Wear

Quite opposite to the axial wear, this wear is caused due to underinflation of car tyres. In this situation, the sidewalls of a car tyre bulge out and are then exposed to maximum traction. Eventually, the sidewalls start wearing off in a very uneven fashion.

However, this type of wear can also occur due to misaligned wheels. So you should always get your wheel alignment checked, once you find such wear on your car tyres.

Feathering

This type of wear happens in a car tyre due to toe-in or toe-out, which occurs due to improper wheel alignment. Normally people don’t notice it at first. But when you feel the treads with your hands, you will notice something odd. One side of the tyre will have sharper treads than the other. This indicates that your tyres are feathering.

This type of wear can be avoided by following good driving practices. Rash driving is the primary reason behind such wear.

One-Sided Wear

This type of wear gets triggered due to misaligned tyres. Due to the wrong alignment, one side of the tyre goes on to wear at a much greater pace than the other parts of the tyres. This type of wear can either be on the inner side of the outer side of the tyre.

Along with getting your wheels checked, ensure that other parts are also in line with the vehicle.

Cupping

Whenever you travel on a bumpy road, you experience a repetitive up and down motion. It is during such motions that your car tyre may develop some circular bumps on its surface. These bumps will make you feel bumpy on the road.

Cupping gets triggered due to malfunctioned shock absorbers and an obsolete suspension system. Therefore, get these parts checked to prevent cupping in your tyres.

Flat Spot Wear

Whenever you take a sharp turn or sudden brake, your tyre takes its toll. Your tyre will develop a flat portion along its axis. To prevent flat spot wear in your car tyre, get your braking system checked once in a while.
