How much electricity does an inverter air conditioner save?

Daytime temperature across several parts of the country soared over 40-degree celsius last year. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the country has witnessed an increase of 0.6-degree celsius country-wide between 1901-10 and 2009-18. In some parts of India, like Rajasthan and Gujarat, the temperature has increased by a full degree celsius as compared to the fifty years.

To fight off the increasing temperatures, inverter ACs are rising to the test. They are rapidly proving to be the energy-efficient and eco-friendly solution to rising temperatures across the country.

What is an Inverter?

An inverter controls the compressor speed of the AC. This means that when the AC is first switched on in a hot room, the cooling occurs rapidly until the temperature is brought down to the desired level. After this, the inverter allows the compressor to slow down to a steady speed that maintains the temperature without exerting excess energy.

Unlike non-inverter ACs, these are an economical and environmentally friendly option because inverters prevent wastage of energy. They push the compressor to cool up to the given point, after which they conserve energy.

Saving Electricity

Now that we understand how an inverter works, it is easy to understand how inverter ACs can save electricity, as compared to non-inverter ACs. Since the former have the option to function at variable levels, the energy consumption is concurrently lesser. For a non-inverter AC perpetually working at full capacity regardless of energy consumption, the energy bills will be higher.

Using an inverter AC saves between 30-50% more energy than a non-inverter AC does. This makes it an economical and environmentally friendly option as well. Certainly, for those who understand the benefits of having an inverter AC, the comforts of efficient indoor cooling don’t necessarily come at the cost of excessive electricity bills.

BEE Star Ratings

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) star ratings is a five-point scale that measures the energy efficiency of appliances such as inverter ACs. The higher the rating, the lower the energy consumption, and thereby, the electricity bill generated by the appliance. When you go out to purchase an inverter AC, it is important to check the BEE rating of the product to understand the degree of energy efficiency the product boasts of.

Based on the data regarding power consumption provided by BEE, an inverter AC with a BEE 3-star rating is approximately 7% more energy-efficient as compared to a BEE 3-star rated non-inverter AC. This is an important consideration to keep in mind when choosing the most energy-efficient AC.

Conclusion

Using an inverter AC is a prudential choice, since it offers more efficient cooling than a non-inverter AC does. Not only does the former provide efficient cooling, it also ensures that the AC’s compressor does not expend more power than is required, thus saving more electricity than a non-inverter AC that runs at a constant speed.

For those looking to purchase an air conditioner this summer, consider purchasing an inverter AC to be both cost-effective and environment-friendly.
