This article provides a basic overview of the steps involved in the application process for studying medicine in the USA.
Four key steps of the admission process for medicine in the US
Admission procedures are complicated. There’s so much going on simultaneously that it gets difficult to manage and give justified attention to all the parts of the application. First thing’s first, you need to be a graduate because in the US, unlike the rest of the world, medicine is offered as a post-graduate program.
If you are aspiring for medical studies in the US, the following are the points you need to go through.
1. Assemble documents
Like every other official procedure, it starts with documents. You have to make sure you have your documents are ready to be submitted. Some of the key documents that you require include Official transcript from high school, your statement, a record of your extra-curricular activities, and, most importantly your MCAT score and its proof.
When you have all these documents at your hands, you are ready to move on to the next step of your way
2. Primary application
Application for medical schools in the USA is divided into two parts. First, the part is called the primary application. This phase begins in June of the application year. If you have to apply for admission in September 2021, you will have to apply in June 2020. Now 2020 is your application year, and 2021 is your admission year.
You can start your application even in May of your application year and complete it by June. You have to submit your details to the American Medical College Application Service in this phase. When your application is accepted, you move on to the secondary application phase.
3. Secondary application
When medical schools accept your application, you enter the second phase of the application. At this point, medical schools will ask you various questions about your inclinations and your goals. Some schools ask you to pay the application fee at this stage of your evaluation. You will need to provide them with additional information and documents which may vary with every school.
4. Interview phase
When you pass the second phase of the application too, you get called up for an interview. You are very close to achieving your medical school goals now. Do not overstress your mind and take help from educational consultants regarding the interview because you do not know a lot about the education system of the US as a foreigner.
