The holidays and summer are notorious for kids having fun. The lack of structured activities can make it more difficult to adjust back to school. A routine of some sort is always important unless on vacation or taking a few days to relax. Mental health should be a focus of this time as well as it can be a time to rejuvenate. School is stressful due to the classes, social situations, and changing hormones in a young body. Keeping kids active is never something that you will regret during time off of school. Below are a few ideas to help keep your children/teens active during time off from school.
Do Something Fun With Family And Friends
The weekends should have an activity planned that helps friends and family get outdoors. There are some climates where this is not possible during certain seasons though. Heading to an outdoor soccer field can be a great time for the entire family. These can be rented to avoid any issues with other parties that might want to use a field. Hikes can be a blast or even sports games among the family. Getting competitive can be the perfect way to trick ourselves into exercising for hours on end.
A family bike ride to various points of interest in a city can be a blast. You can explore a city or town and visit places you have never been to before. This can be perfect for a family that has just relocated and want to understand the layout of their new location. Bike paths are available in a number of locations which can make it very easy and safe to bike together.
Holiday Sports/Interest Camps
There are so many camps over the winter break and even spring break. The best camps do occur during the summer and cover a number of interests. The social aspect of these camps can be so important as your kids will be meeting those with similar interests from other schools. Sending your kid to camp with a friend is always recommended as it can be tough not knowing anyone at any camp. Put together a few different camps to allow your child/teen to choose which one they will be taking part in.
Limit Screen Time Even For New Devices/Consoles
The holidays are full of new gifts which can lead kids to stay on their new devices or consoles for days on end. Time limits need to keep in mind how excited your kids might be. A certain amount of time gaming or surfing social media should be set. Kids tend to head outside or do something active once technology is no longer available.
Keeping your kids active during time off from school can be so important. The summer is far more important than winter break as your teens likely need a break after exams. Staying active does not mean that your kids cannot have fun and they should not spend the entire break in front of the television or computer.
