How to Know If You Have Bed Bugs – 7 Early Signs to Look For

Many people mistakenly believe that bed bugs are only found in dirty homes, but this is not the case. Bed bugs can infest any type of home, no matter how clean it is. So, if you have suspect bed bugs in your home, you need to take action immediately and use a bug powder duster or sticky bug traps.

A bug powder duster is a device used to apply a dusting spray to surfaces where insects are found, such as cracks and crevices, behind appliances, and under furniture. On the other hand, sticky bug traps are devices used to capture insects that come in contact with them. The traps usually consist of adhesive material. The insects get stuck to the adhesive when they land on the trap.

However, before you go ahead, you need to identify the areas of bug infestation. In this guide, we will discuss the signs that indicate bed bug infestation in your home.

How to know if you have bed bugs?

Bed bugs are notoriously hard to find and harder to get rid of, especially when you live in densely populated areas. However, recognizing the early signs of bed bug infestation can help homeowners get rid of bed bugs.

So, Here are the early signs of bed bugs that can help you confirm the presence of bed bugs:

  1. Unusual musty odor with no apparent cause: If you have bed bugs, you may notice a sweet, musty smell in your home. This smell is caused by the bugs’ pheromones, and it’s an easy way to tell if you have an infestation.
  2. Small, red, itchy bumps on the skin: Another early sign of bed bugs is itchy, red bites on your skin. These bites are usually in a line or cluster, and they can be quite painful. If you notice bites on your skin, it’s important to check for other signs of bed bugs before assuming that you have them.
  3. Bloodstains on bedsheets, clothing, or pillow: One of the first signs of bed bugs are tiny, brownish-red stains on your sheets. These stains are caused by the bugs themselves, as well as by their droppings. Bed bugs typically feed at night, so you may not notice the stains until you wake up in the morning.
  4. Fecal marks on sheets and clothing: Bedbugs leave behind small, dark stains on surfaces. Fecal marks are left behind when the bedbug feeds on your blood and then defecates. You’ll usually find them near where the bedbug was feeding.
  5. Pinhead-sized, pearly white ovals in crevices: Bed bugs lay their eggs in small clusters, and these eggs are another sign of an infestation. The eggs are white, and they’re about the size of a pinhead. You may also find small eggshells in your home, which are another sign that bed bugs are present.
  6. Yellowish-brown, translucent shell casings of bed bugs: Bedbugs shed their skin as they grow, and you may find yellowish-brown, translucent shell casings around areas where bed bugs are present. Since bed bugs go through 5 lifecycle stages and shed their skin several times, the size of shell casings can vary.
  7. Live bed bugs in tight cracks and crevices: Of course, the best way to confirm that you have bed bugs is to find live bugs. They’re small, brownish-red, and they move quickly. If you find any bed bugs in your home, it’s important to call a professional to get rid of the infestation.

The Bottom Line

If you think you have bed bugs, it’s important to take action immediately. These pests are hard to get rid of, and they can cause serious health problems. If you notice any of the signs listed above, you can use bed bug furniture traps to get rid of the bed bugs in your home.
