So while they are certainly fun and cute, there are other beneficial reasons to use them in your communication with students. Here are a few ideas that may convince you to start using those cute, expressive digital emotions.
For those of you who like to text using emojis, you can now put them on your Chromebook by installing the Google Japanese Input IME. Follow these steps to get started. First, go to the Chrome Web Store and search for Google Japanese Input IME. Then, click the Add to Chrome button at the top of the page that appears in the search results.
Next, go to your desktop, open Chrome, and click on the hamburger menu in the top-right corner of your screen. From there, select Settings and show Advanced Settings at the bottom of that page.
How to Use Emojis on a Chromebook
To use the emoji keyboard on a Chromebook, you must first enable input options in the Chrome OS drawer:
- Select the time in the lower right corner of the screen.
- To open your Chromebook’s settings, select Settings to gear in the pop-up window.
- Scroll to the bottom of the Settings page and select the Advanced option.
- Scroll down the page again and select Languages and Input.
- Again, scroll down the page and select the toggle switch next to Show input options on a shelf to enable it.
- Close Settings and select the US in the drawer to bring up the input options.
- Select the smiley icon to bring up the emoji keyboard.
- You can now choose from hundreds of built-in emoticons. Tap or click the icons in the bottom row to browse the different categories, then select the keyboard icon in the bottom right corner to minimize the emoji keyboard when you’re done.

Since Chromebooks have built-in support for using emojis, it’s relatively easy to use them without software keyboards. Using emojis on a Chromebook is a straightforward task. All you need is a little guidance. All these ways give you a fast option that you can utilize without navigating external sites.

You can also use the on-screen keyboard to access emojis on a Chromebook:
- Select the time in the lower right corner of the screen.
- To open your Chromebook’s settings, select Settings to gear in the pop-up window.
- Scroll to the bottom of the Settings page and select the Advanced option.
- Scroll down and under Accessibility, select Manage Accessibility Features.
- Scroll down to the Keyboard and text input section and select the toggle next to Enable on-screen keyboard.
- To bring up the keyboard, close Settings and select the Keyboard icon on the shelf.
- To switch to the emoji keyboard, select the smiley icon in the bottom row.

Steps to using emoji on Chrome OS
Show input options in the shelf
The best part about this process is that it doesn’t require you to install any extensions. To begin, tap on your avatar in the bottom right corner of the Chrome OS interface. From there, tap on the gear icon to be taken to the settings menu.
Now, scroll to the bottom of the menu and expand it into the Advanced section. Locate the Language & Input section and open the Input method section. Lastly, toggle on Show input options in the shelf. Use the images below to help if you get lost along the way.
Launching the virtual keyboard
Now that the input methods icon has been added to your Chromebook’s shelf, just click on it. The pop-up dialog will show all of the different ways you can input text including the option for emojis. Tap on the smiley icon and the emoji keyboard will populate the bottom third of the screen. Just tap on a text field on-screen and then select your desired emoji.

Finding emoji
Sometimes when you launch the virtual keyboard, the emojis aren’t immediately shown. Just like with keyboards on Android, the emoji section is semi-hidden. As you can see from the below screenshots, the first thing you need to do is click on the three-dot menu icon. From there, select the smiley icon, and you’ll be taken to the emoji section. Once you’re done adding an emoji to text or a tweet, you can click on the keyboard icon in the bottom right corner and the keyboard will go away.
So how do you access emojis on your devices?
On all devices, put your cursor where you want the emoji to go, then use the keystrokes or follow the directions you see below to activate your device’s emoji keyboard.
Mac: Hold down Command+Control+Space Bar. The emoji keyboard will appear so that you can select your emoji.
