BRIARCLIFF MANOR, NY — Kate Chopin, an American author of short stories and novels who is considered by some to have been a forerunner of feminist authors of the 20th century, will be the topic of a complimentary seminar to be held Thursday, December 9th at Westchester Community College. Copies of two short stories by Kate Chopin will be distributed to attendees prior to the event.
The Club at Briarcliff Manor, the region’s premier senior living community under development in Briarcliff Manor, is sponsoring the event as part of its new program for seniors called Ageless at The Club.
The seminar will be held from 1:00 to 2:30 pm in the Foundation Board Room at the Westchester Community College Library at WCC’s Valhalla campus. Seating is limited and reservations are suggested. Dr. Heather Ostman, Assistant Professor and Assistant Chair of the English Department at Westchester Community College, will give a lecture and lead a discussion about the author whose work is enjoying a renaissance in recent years. Dr. Ostman is President and co-founder of the Kate Chopin International Society, an author society dedicated to the study of Chopin’s work and the preservation of her legacy and contribution to the American literary canon.

wrote two published novels (At Fault and The Awakening) and about a hundred short stories in the 1890s. Most of her fiction is set in Louisiana and most of her best-known work focuses on the lives of sensitive, intelligent women. Her short stories were well received in her own time and were published by some of America’s most prestigious magazines, including Vogue and the Atlantic Monthly.
