Road hazards occur suddenly and cause heavy damages. They can’t be ignored because of their unpredictability. However, you can still minimise their chances of occurring. Most road accidents are caused due to poorly maintained vehicles.

This led to the countries passing strict traffic and road safety rules. The UK is one such country that has strict rules regarding the vehicle and the passenger’s safety. The country has a regulation that makes the MOT in Leamington Spa passing certificate mandatory for vehicle owners.

Usually, drivers find themselves confused about this test. There can be a lot of confusion, especially when you are a new driver. This blog consists of all the information you need for the MOT test.

What is an MOT test?

It is an annual test in the UK where every vehicle that has completed 3 years of service is thoroughly checked. It consists of checking the vehicle components and systems for damages and leaks.

The sole aim of an MOT test is to ensure that your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition. It helps in keeping you safe by minimising the chances of road accidents and damages.

When is my MOT due?

The MOT needs to be done once a year. The dates for different drivers may vary because of the variation in their due dates. You can always check the details of your last MOT on your car’s MOT certificate. Another way of checking your MOT due date is by going through the government website. You will get all the necessary information after filling out some requirements.

Components checked during the test

  • Horn, check lights, and steering wheel
  • Tyres, wheels, and suspension system
  • Exhaust emission system
  • Doors and windows
  • Windscreen, mirrors, and headlights
  • Seats
  • Battery and engine

The above-mentioned list is just a small introduction. Various other things are also checked during the test. The aim is your safety and that’s why the entire vehicle is analysed accordingly.

Categories of FAIL and PASS

The MOT test either results in a pass or fail. But there’s more to the story. These two categories have subdivisions as well. You will directly pass an MOT when the car is maintained well and has no faults. Another case will be when you are given a passing certificate with a warning. This happens with cars having minor issues. The test centre will issue a reminder notice for such vehicles.

Failing the test with major problems means you have failed the MOT but you can still drive the car to get the repairs done.

However, a car failing the MOT with dangerous faults will not be allowed to be driven. You will have to get the repairs done at the test centre itself.

What happens when you fail the MOT?

You don’t need to worry if your vehicle has failed the MOT. You can get a retest scheduled after getting the repairs done. All you need to do is get the appointment and reach the centre on the specified date and time.

Why is the test important?

Your safety is of utmost importance. When you drive on the road you are not only responsible for your safety but for the well-being of your co-passengers as well. An MOT ensures that your car is safe to drive.
