A thin steel sheet coated with tin is called a tinplate. It’s not just a beautiful metallic luster but also contains outstanding properties. Some of its properties are weldability, corrosion resistance, and solderability.

Most commonly it is used to make cans, some types of cans are listed below:

  • Artistic Cans
  • Beverages Cans
  • 18-Liter Cans
  • Food Cans

We do not mean to say that its use is only limited to cans, but it is also used for various other purposes. Such as, it’s also used to make electrical machinery parts and other products besides containers.

Qualities of Tinplate

It’s the beauty and durability of tin, that makes it used by most people and in various ways. Let’s discuss some of the features.

1. Aesthetic Appearance:

One of the characteristics of tin is its beautiful metallic luster. By selecting the surface finish of the substrate steel sheet, you can have manufactured various types of surface roughness.

2. Great Quality of Printability and Paintability:

You can paint it beautifully with the use of different kinds of inks and lacquers.

3. Formable and Powerful:

If you will select a proper temper grade, you can obtain appropriate formability for various applications and also the required power after forming.

4. Exceptional Corrosion Resistance:

You will get an appropriate corrosion resistance for container content, after choosing a proper coating weight.

5. Highly Solderable and Weldable:

People use it to make different types of cans just by welding or soldering them.

Describe The Advantages of Tinplate

Let’s discuss some of the benefits of using this material. No doubt, it has plenty of benefits and you can use it in numerous ways as well. But we will just discuss here a few! First of all, we all know that it is most commonly used for packaging purposes. Moreover, you must know that it is considered one of the best packaging materials. For instance, if we talk about some other packaging materials such as plastic containments or cardboard, we know that they are extremely light weighted and cannot contain higher weights. In the comparison of these packaging materials, tin is one of the most powerful materials to be used.

Another term TFS is used that means Tin Free Steel. It is manufactured by applying the electrolytic chromic acid treatment on steel sheets.

Types of Corrosion Processes

Tinplate has to face various types of corrosion processes. Here are the types of corrosion that it faces. Let’s discuss them one by one:

·  Erosion Corrosion:

It takes place slowly and over time. It usually happens when you left open to it in water air or any other thing for some time. In such a case, erosion starts with the small size air bubble and ends up as a result of corrosion.

·  Filiform Corrosion:

It usually occurs under the tin’s thin coating. Afterward, it allots all over the plate as the small thread-like filaments. As a result, coating cracks and lumps.

·  Pitting Corrosion:

This type of corrosion does not affect the entire surface; however, it just occurs in a certain area of the surface. The reason for this type of corrosion is the dirt particles that stick on it. Some other reasons could be water line attacks, concentration cell corrosion, and crevice corrosion.
