Find out about the best road trip routes to take in the UK, so you can make the most of the incredible places the UK has to offer.
Road trips are incredibly fun and make a great basis for a holiday. Whether you’re driving a car, campervan or caravan, or even a motorbike, there is a real thrill to seeing lots of amazing parts of the UK in one trip.
As we go into a brand new year, now is a great time to be thinking about the kinds of adventures you will have this spring and summer on the road. To inspire you, here are some of the best road trips the UK has to offer:
Scotland North Coast 500
For some of the most incredible scenery available in this country, the circular route of the Scottish North Coast is just stunning. The Black Isla, Inverness, Sutherland, Wester Ross and more make up this unforgettable trip. You’ll go through little fishing villages, round thrilling hairpin bends in craggy hillsides and past shiny shingle beaches. It really is the kind of drive you need a camera for, and it takes about 7 days depending on how many stop offs you do.
The Atlantic Highway
Heading down South is never going to be an eyesore, especially on the Atlantic Highway where you see some of the most exceptional coast available in all of the UK. You’re heading down taking in Exmoor, Bude, Newquay, Padstow and Lands End as well as everything in between. This side of the coast is ideal for surfers and nature lovers, and you can do it all in under a week, or take much longer and allow yourself time to to find the many hidden gems Cornwall has to offer. Consider doing the trip out of season (avoid Easter and Summer) to make the most of empty beaches, good weather and cheaper or free parking.
Northern Ireland Coast
There is an amazing route between Belfast to Londonderry that is incredibly dramatic and great for Game Of Thrones fans, as many of the iconic landscapes were used in the programme. It takes about 4 days to do, and is great for couples and for bird watchers, as there are many rare birds to be spotted along the coast.
Black Mountain Pass, Wales
This trip is short, but certainly worthwhile for the scenery and great roads. Going between Llandovery all the way through to Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen you will see plenty of gorgeous landmarks and beautiful hills and villages. The route is very twisty and winding so do take care to drive at a sensible speed. Even at a slow pace though you can complete the drive very quickly in a day, so plan a trip in Wales around it, not solely because of it.
Need Somewhere To Store Your Campervan Out Of Season?
If you are looking to drive a campervan on your road trip, why not consider storing it in low-cost self storage out of season? Remember to compare self storage costs in your area first to make sure you get the best deal, especially if you live in a big city like London.
Campervans are often prone to rust and they cost a lot to buy too, so it makes sense to keep them somewhere dry and safe out of season. Cheap self storage is a really great solution to campervan storage when you’re not off on your next adventure.
